About this course

Namrata is a sustainability enthusiast who promotes the idea of sustainable clothing through workshops on natural dyeing. She has been exploring natural dyeing techniques for over a decade and is passionate about educating people about the benefits of using plants and minerals to dye fabrics. As a co-founder of Color Ashram, She offers an online practical hands on course to learn the process of Natural Dyeing Topics covered: Why natural dyes? How are synthetic dyes polluting? Learn about the history and chemistry of natural dyes and process, terminology, classification and language of natural dyes, fabric preparation, what is foraging for dye sources, hands on session on basic natural dye extraction of red and yellow dyes, Indigo vat making and dyeing, shade variations, exhausting dye baths,curing process and wash care of natural dyed fabrics. In addition you will also learn about an innovative standardised form of natural dyes.

Course Material

Lesson 1:

No materials required

Lesson 2:

Foraging Apron and basket (available on colorashram web shop), or any apron with pockets
2 litre steel utensil to boil dye source
Mixer or mortar and pestle to grind dye source, spoons and strainer

Lesson 3:

Dye bath bucket
Fabric swatches (4 and 10 inches from kit)
Tumbler
1 big bowl of hot water
Liquid detergent
Apron and napkin to wipe
Good light source
One big tea strainer or strainer from the kit
Heat source- gas
One 2 litre steel utensil for simmering fabric on heat

Lesson 4:

One small tub and a bucket of water, heat source
A 2 litre steel utensil to boil dye source
Mixer or mortar and pestle to grind dye source, spoons and strainer

Lesson 5:

Three separate clean buckets (Wash Reds, Wash Blues and Wash Yellows)
Tumbler
A bucket of water
Dyed fabrics
Liquid Detergent (neutral- like Ezee or genteel)
Powder Detergent- like surf
Hot water
Vinegar
Pegs and clothing line
Some spare containers
